Protecting your photos (Discussion)

With the Internet, sending pictures around to friends and so on – how do you protect your photos so that others do not use them and so that you get credit? Do you add your name somewhere on the photo? How?

If you upload your photos to sites like Flickr, you can specify a license under which users can use/not use your photos. Check out the Creative Commons community. for more info.

LearnHub allows you to attribute these same licenses to any content you contribute to learning communities.

@movingaround: You can sometimes embed copyright data in the image file itself but it can be easily lost if the image is resized or converted to another format. The best bet is what Malgosia suggests above; share your images on Flickr and just send your friends links to your photos. You can see my photos on Flickr here.

In addition, software like Photoshop lets you embed the copyright information that is not visible to the naked eye. You can also only put low resolution images online. If someone does “borrow” them, they won’t be able to make high quality prints.

I agree with Dr. Henrichs, I prefer to put images online in lower resolution. Also sometimes i would add a border roughly 20 pixel around the image and add my information such as my name title of the image and the year it was taken.
